CrowdStrike BSOD and EVP Systems

Summary: EVP Systems is not affected by the CrowdStrike BSOD, nor are EVP Office installations once impacted machines are restored. Our Support Department is able to help any client who decides to reinstall EVP Office rather than restore the computer.

On July 19, 2024, CrowdStrike—a leading security provider—released a patch to their Falcon system that inadvertently caused Windows computers world-wide to experience a “Blue Screen of Death” (“BSOD”), the colloquial name for what is displayed after Microsoft’s operating system crashes. Fixing the problem requires manual intervention at each affected device, and this caused massive IT outages at airlines, banks, hospitals, and, of course, businesses. (Technical details are available on the CrowdStrike site.)

EVP Systems does not use CrowdStrike, and has not been affected by the CrowdStrike BSOD. Our vendors and third-party systems also continue to run unimpeded. Details about EVP Systems information security policy is available on our Legal and Compliance page, as are documents covering our intrusion detection process and disaster recovery and business continuity planning.

Many of our clients, however, have been impacted by this incident, and EVP Systems is ready to help restore your company’s EVP Office installations if needed.

Restoring a computer affected by the BSOD is relatively simple, and detailed in the CrowdStrike link above. Once a computer has been restored, any EVP Office installation it had will remain exactly as it was before, with all configurations and files intact. When the workstation is running again, the EVP Office applications can be used exactly as they were prior to the outage. (Though, it should be noted, that if any data or executables are stored on the network instead of the local disk drive, the machines that host the remote filesystems will also need to be restored, as will any networking systems that provide proxies or other services.)

If your company has chosen to re-image or re-build their affected computers instead of repairing them, the latest version of EVP Office—including EstateVal, GiftVal, CostBasis, and CapWatch—is always available for free from https://evpsys.com/software/. Re-installations will require an Account Information Key for your specific EVP Systems account, which can be request from our Support Department, at support@evpsys.com or https://evpsys.com/support/.

If you have any questions about the CrowdStrike BSOD and EVP Systems response to it, please don’t hesitate to contact Support. Good luck, and please let us know how we can help.
